We had a really great Memorial Day weekend! It felt so good getting a lot of little projects on our to do list checked off.
Max surprised me with a new picnic table for Memorial Day! What a sweet hubby I have. I have been wanting one for awhile. I plan on sanding it and painting it black.
Our "Early Girl" has many little tomatoes beginning to grow.
Instead of growing potatoes in the ground horizontally, we are growing them vertically. Using a tomato cage as the frame we placed several Yukon Golds at the bottom nestled in the compost. Then we wrapped the cage with bamboo screen and wired it closed.
Lastly we covered the potatoes with compost and hay. The potatoes will begin to sprout and as I see the green sprouts and they are about six inches tall I will repeat the compost and hay process until the sprouts reach the top. After the potato bush blooms I cut back the water for a couple of weeks then stop watering and let the bush die back and the potatoes should begin to firm.
Open the bamboo screen and out the potatoes should tumble.
I'm crossing my fingers.
This process should yield 2-3 times more potatoes than the standard way of planting.
