Our little garden is blooming!

We had a really great Memorial Day weekend! It felt so good getting a lot of little projects on our to do list checked off.

Max surprised me with a new picnic table for Memorial Day! What a sweet hubby I have. I have been wanting one for awhile. I plan on sanding it and painting it black.

Another project that has been waiting for our attention was to decide on the ground cover that would go around our lawn area. We ended choosing small river rocks.

It looks so clean and neat now. We love it.

Now I want to go back a slowly add in more plants to bring more color texture to the space.

Our little garden is also shaping up quit nicely.
Our "Early Girl" has many little tomatoes beginning to grow.

We added hay to the barrels. Hopefully, this will help keep in the moisture and the plants won't dry out as quickly.

Not to mention, it makes them look really great. The marigolds also help bring in the good bugs and make the garden bright.

We have several varieties of tomatoes, different cucumbers, three types of corn and our last barrel is a trial project.

The Potato Tower.

Instead of growing potatoes in the ground horizontally, we are growing them vertically. Using a tomato cage as the frame we placed several Yukon Golds at the bottom nestled in the compost. Then we wrapped the cage with bamboo screen and wired it closed.

Lastly we covered the potatoes with compost and hay. The potatoes will begin to sprout and as I see the green sprouts and they are about six inches tall I will repeat the compost and hay process until the sprouts reach the top. After the potato bush blooms I cut back the water for a couple of weeks then stop watering and let the bush die back and the potatoes should begin to firm.

Open the bamboo screen and out the potatoes should tumble.

I'm crossing my fingers.

This process should yield 2-3 times more potatoes than the standard way of planting.

Wish me luck!

I also started getting my succulents planted and chose small shells to cover the soil. Again, it helps keep the moisture in and is really pretty to look at.

How is your garden looking?
